Kathy Vergara (Left-Handed Face Painting - Tips, Tricks and Techniques) Masterclass
Agenda
5 Basic Principles of Left-Handed Face Painting
1. Brush Control & Stroke Direction
- Left-handed painters can have a tendency to push strokes instead of pulling them—learning to control pressure helps keep lines crisp.
- Adjusting hand placement and rotating the client’s face or your canvas makes certain strokes easier and prevents smudging.
2. Hand Positioning & Smudge Prevention
- Work from right to left to avoid resting your hand on fresh paint.
- Use a pinkie rest or a light hand touch to stabilize while painting without disturbing the design.
3. Symmetry & Design Adaptation
- Instead of mirroring right-handed designs exactly, adjust elements to flow naturally with your dominant hand.
- Flip reference images or break down complex designs into smaller, easier-to-control sections.
4. Speed & Efficiency for Live Events
- Arrange your kit so your paints, brushes, and sponges are easily accessible without extra movement.
- Use one-stroke techniques and paint on the right side of the model's face to speed up designs.
5. Confidence in Your Left-Handed Style
- Don’t force yourself to paint like a right-handed artist—embrace what works best for you!
- With practice, your left-handed approach can become an advantage, allowing for more fluid, natural designs and a unique painting style.
